Ohio Superintendent Licensure Certificate Program Overview

Gain knowledge aligned with Ohio superintendent standards

As part of Franklin’s superintendent certification program, you’ll be prepared for the complex challenges education leaders face when guiding K-12 school districts. Aligned with Ohio standards and updated with the latest in reading science and dyslexia laws, Franklin’s program blends online coursework with a two-trimester, hands-on internship. You’ll gain expertise in strategic planning, school financing and funding, school law, data-driven decision making, and community engagement – essential skills for creating equitable high-performing learning environments.

Learn from in-field experts in a flexible superintendent certificate program

Designed for individuals currently serving in principal or administrator roles, Franklin’s online program has start dates every term (fall, spring and summer). Whether you choose to combine each 8-week course with a 12-week internship to finish in two terms - or slow things down to work at your own pace, Franklin’s program fits the life of working professionals.

Coursework is supplemented with live, online meet sessions that provide an opportunity to connect with current superintendents, who share their expertise as guest lecturers. You’ll also round out your professional network through collaborations with your classmates, who are also administrators and principals.

Apply what you learn through two required internships

Two 12-week internships over two academic terms (trimesters) provide an opportunity to apply what you’re learning to create a comprehensive improvement plan for your school district. With direct mentorship from an experienced district leader who holds a valid superintendent license, you’ll conduct action research on a specific district issue such as improving student attendance, supporting special education, or enhancing teacher retention.

Completing your plan will require you to gather and analyze data, propose solutions, implement strategies and evaluate outcomes. You’ll also present your district improvement plan to simulated or actual stakeholders for feedback and evaluation.

Put yourself on a seamless path to continuing education

Choosing the superintendent license program at Franklin will prepare you to lead and manage K-12 school districts in Ohio. However, it can also position you for continued learning throughout your career. By completing the superintendent certification program, you will have already completed the two courses that make up the PK-12 Educational Leadership focus within the Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership. While not required for superintendent roles, working toward an Ed.D. may satisfy the requirements to keep your license up-to-date, as well as providing broader leadership knowledge to support educational leaders and systems.
