Just as an MBA prepares a business executive for corporate roles, Franklin's 14-month online Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree program prepares you to take on public administration leadership. Master of Public Administration Degree Overview
Get the skills to excel with a theory-to-practice online MPA
Success in public administration requires constant learning and the desire to stay abreast of current thinking and events. Franklin’s MPA program is designed to help you do just that. With interactive assignments, you’ll have many opportunities to connect what you learn to what’s happening in your community. In addition to Franklin’s faculty of in-field scholar-practitioners who bring their expertise to each course, you’ll have assignments like leader interviews that put you 1:1 with a government leader. You’ll also write policy memos on issues that are currently being debated.
You gain valuable insights into the reality of governance, decision-making and community engagement through the scenario-based learning that is woven throughout the master’s in public administration program. You’ll become well acquainted with Franklin Heights (pop. 132,520), a hypothetical city that becomes the backdrop for public administration theories and concepts. Each course introduces a new aspect of city life full of real-world dilemmas and opportunities to apply your new-found knowledge.
Create a culture that fosters individual and organizational growth
Get the tools necessary to manage your two most important organizational resources: people and information. You’ll learn how to apply human resources concepts to attract and grow a workforce capable of implementing the initiatives necessary for success. You’ll also build an understanding of the legal, ethical and political challenges surrounding the management of HR and information systems. Along the way, you’ll build the communication skills necessary to articulate your vision.
Prepare to lead and manage public service organizations
Build the skills to become an ethical and effective leader in the public sector. You will learn how to apply leadership theories and principles to real-world situations, and how to work with diverse groups of people to achieve your goals. You will also develop your cultural competency and communication skills, which are essential for leadership in a complex and dynamic environment. Coursework will equip you to face the challenges and opportunities of leading government organizations including how to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders; particularly elected officials, the media, interest groups and the public.
Tailor your online MPA degree to your interests or career aspirations
By pursuing Franklin’s online MPA degree you’ll learn to apply public administration theory to analyze current governmental issues. Through six, 6-week major area courses, you’ll build strong communication and interdisciplinary problem-solving skills that will equip you for leadership and management roles in government agencies, public service organizations, policy and research institutions or regulatory bodies. You’ll be able to thrive in fast-paced collaborative environments focused on policy implementation, public service and community development.
With a focus on leadership and collaboration, the traditional MPA provides maximum career flexibility. However, specializations enable you to align your studies with your passion.
Designed to help you enter or advance in law enforcement, the court system or administrative roles in corrections, the MPA-Criminal Justice Specialization prepares professionals who can effectively manage criminal justice organizations through a focused curriculum covering relevant policies, laws, ethics, analysis and administration specific to the criminal justice field.
The MPA-Healthcare Specialization provides comprehensive training in administering healthcare delivery systems, programs and organizations by covering healthcare-specific policies, operations, and analytics. It’s a good fit for those aspiring to managerial roles in hospitals, health systems, public health agencies or other healthcare organizations.
For HR professionals looking for a graduate credential for career advancement or anyone interested in HR roles within government agencies, the MPA-Human Resources Specialization is a good fit. A well-rounded overview of HR management will enable graduates to effectively oversee the employee lifecycle and develop HR initiatives.
Gain advanced leadership skills with a focus on leading teams, managing organizational change, improving processes and promoting a positive workplace culture. The MPA-Organizational Leadership Specialization provides a good foundation for anyone looking to take on supervisory roles in public or nonprofit organizations or individuals interested in management consulting.
