Columbus, OH (December 7, 2022)

Franklin University, a leading educator of working adults, is pleased to announce that the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s (ODPS) Office of Criminal Justice Services (OCJS) has awarded the University Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) funding to support its promising program, “Every Officer is a Leader” which was founded to help advance the criminal justice system.

The University is honored to be selected for the JAG funding alongside 149 competitive projects supported by the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s (ODPS) Office of Criminal Justice Services (OCJS). The annual grants support the crime prevention work of law enforcement, prosecutors, courts, corrections facilities, crime victim and witness initiatives, and others.

“Local communities all have varying needs when it comes to combatting crime, and these grants are tailored to support crime prevention initiatives that will make the most difference in each community,” said Governor DeWine.

Founded by Franklin University and its partner school, Columbus State Community College, and several area law enforcement agencies, the “Every Officer is a Leader” course was established in 2017 to evaluate the feasibility of online law enforcement in-service training. The ten-week course discusses foundational leadership truths, provides tools that focus on success, and demonstrates strategies that inspire ongoing leadership development.

Growing in popularity, in 2022 nearly 50 officers from local Central Ohio law enforcement agencies participated in the course. Through the designation of the Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program funding, Franklin can provide online training to a larger population of law enforcement officers in 2023.

As Franklin continues to make a difference through its theory-to-practice coursework, the University also offers an M.A. in Criminal Justice Administration, equipping graduates to solve present-day challenges at the local, state, or federal level: https://bit.ly/3B4K8od.
