Profile

I am Professor Emeritus of Applied Linguistics in the Department of Applied Linguistics at the Pennsylvania State University. My research focus has been on documenting the specialized interactional practices and actions by which teaching and learning happens in the L2 classroom with the aim of showcasing the sophisticated, practical nature of teaching in new and potentially transformative ways. I am an expert in qualitative methodology and in using the following analytic methods: conversation analysis, discourse analysis, ethnography of communication, and narrative analysis. I have experience using NVIVO to help code and interpret data. I am widely published. In addition to nine books, I have published in top tier journals such as Applied Linguistics, International Journal of Bilingualism, Journal of Pragmatics, The Modern Language Journal, and Research on Language and Social Interaction.
