College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
The Learning Commons Testing Center is a certified CLEP testing center and can offer CLEP examinations for its students and the surrounding community. The College-Level Examination Program or CLEP is a widely trusted credit-for-course examination program. CLEP is a nationally sponsored program, however, Franklin University sets its own policies regarding qualifying credit. Please talk with your academic advisor about CLEP eligibility before you study for and take an exam.
CLEP currently offers 33 different exams, including a number of math, science and business disciplines. With the exception of the combination multiple-choice and essay College Composition exam, each CLEP is a computerized, 90-minute, multiple-choice test.
Find CLEP exam guides at your local library, Franklin’s Main Campus Learning Commons, most major bookstores, and the CLEP website at https://clep.collegeboard.org/.
To Register:
Students visit the CLEP website (link below) to locate an official CLEP testing center and purchase an exam voucher.

The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) provides computer-based, multiple-choice standardized tests that award students college credit for what they already know. CLEP tests are $90 and vouchers must be purchased directly from CollegeBoard beforehand. Please note, there is also a $40 administration fee assessed for all CLEP tests completed at Franklin University's testing center.
Most CLEP score reports are available immediately after the test is completed. However, processing may take up to five weeks. It’s best to complete exams before submitting your graduation application. Proficiency examinations must be completed a minimum of three weeks prior to graduation. You may repeat unsuccessful attempts to pass a CLEP after a three-month period.
*The College Composition CLEP contains approximately 50 multiple-choice items to be answered in 50 minutes and two mandatory, centrally scored essays to be written in 70 minutes (for a total of 120 minutes). Shortly after each administration of the College Composition examination, college English faculty from around the country score the essays via an online scoring system. Students usually receive their scores three to four weeks after testing.
Students living outside of central Ohio will need to visit the CLEP website to locate an official CLEP testing center. Active military students should speak with their academic advisor prior to taking a CLEP examination because registration may differ.
Credit by examination is under review and is subject to change. Please check with your academic advisor or the Learning Commons for the most up-to-date information.
CLEP exams should be completed at least one trimester prior to the term in which the student expects to graduate and should be planned with the student’s Academic Advisor. NOTE: A student may not earn credit through proficiency exams for courses previously attempted, including any courses in which the student has received a failing grade or a ‘W’ or if it is during or after the second week of the course.
Students may repeat unsuccessful attempts to pass a CLEP after 90 days.
DSST
DSST, formerly known as the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), is a nationally recognized prior learning assessment program. It lets you earn college credit for learning done on the job or through independent study -- including reading. Because Franklin University sets its own policies regarding qualifying credit, please talk to your academic advisor about your DSST eligibility before scheduling testing.
DSST currently offers 30 different exams in such subject areas such as math, applied technology and business (the testing center does not offer the Principles of Public Speaking DSST). DSST examinations measure achievement one course at a time so you can study for one anytime, including while taking other courses.
Each exam is a computerized, two-hour, multiple-choice test. Find DSST study guides at the DSST website.
A student may not earn credit through proficiency exams for courses previously attempted, including any courses in which the student has received a failing grade or a ‘W’ or if it is during or after the second week of the course.
