Defeating Self-Doubt
May 9, 2023 | By Breanna Mackley

There may be moments in your academic journey at Franklin when you feel unsure. Maybe you are worried about an upcoming presentation or nervous about a final exam. These feelings are self-doubt or the lack of confidence in oneself and one's abilities. Don't worry! These feelings are natural, but there are steps you can take to overcome these feelings.
- Embrace Doubt
The first step to overcoming self-doubt is to acknowledge that doubt is part of being human. It is a defense mechanism we use to protect against failure. Once you understand the desire to self-doubt, this knowledge will better equip you to reduce its power over you.
- Call Out Your Critics
We often hear our doubts through the voice of our "inner critic." You know, that inner monologue that tends to point out our faults, abilities, and decisions. Try giving this inner critic a name to help you distinguish it from the real you. Then write a short letter to yourself reminding you of why you can't listen to Negative Nancy.
- Make Your Mission Bigger Than Your Fear
Focus on your motivations to keep the courage to move forward. When the voice of self-doubt begins to rise, concentrate on the actions needed despite your doubts. Even if your actions don't reach your desired results, it is better to try than live with the regret of not trying at all.
- Build a Support System
Self-doubt doesn't stand a chance when you surround yourself with the right people. Those who bring out the best in you will increase your confidence. Confidence is the skill you need to keep self-doubt at bay. Also, ensure you don't let those who will create negativity into your life.
- Train the Brave Daily
Building confidence is a daily process. BJ Fog of Standford University developed a study that showed scaling back bigger behaviors into smaller actions will create long-lasting behavioral changes. Courage is like a muscle; the more you use it, the braver you become. Next time you face an opportunity or problem, and you feel self-doubt arising, act! Every action you take dilutes the power of self-doubt.
