Winter months can bring anticipation and excitement but can also be challenging. Do you ever have unexplained feelings of fatigue, irritability or withdrawal during this time of year? You might be affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression linked to seasonal changes, particularly reduced sunlight impacting serotonin levels. The Mayo Clinic identifies common SAD symptoms as:

  • Feeling listless, sad or down most of the day, nearly every day
  • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Having low energy and feeling sluggish
  • Having problems with sleeping too much
  • Experiencing carbohydrate cravings, overeating and weight gain
  • Having difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling hopeless, worthless or guilty

Knowing all of this, is there a way for one to impact SAD positively? According to Everyday Health, several strategies positively affect this condition:

  • Maximize sunlight exposure: Create a schedule for increased sunlight to mitigate serotonin reduction
  • Maintain a supportive community: Connect with others about your challenges. Regular support is essential to staying balanced and positive during this period.
  • Engage in physical activity: Boost energy and positive emotions with physical activity during daylight.
  • Practice personal reflection:  Keep a journal or practice regular mindfulness to keep positive thoughts at the forefront of your mind and develop strategies against negative thinking.

While the winter months may be challenging for some, an opportunity also exists to learn more about oneself and create deeper connections with others. Should you experience symptoms of SAD, please email the Office of Student Life at studentlife@franklin.edu for assistance.
